Mr. Grant Hayes

Grant Hayes is a Veterinary Surgeon working in private practice within the UK Commercial poultry industry. As a previous partner in Slate Hall Veterinary Practice, he has worked as a lead clinical veterinarian with several poultry integrators in addition to line management responsibility for the veterinary team and the UKAS-accredited laboratory.

He has consulted and presented on a range of professional clinical and food safety issues in the UK and overseas including in New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines, Azerbaijan, and the Czech Republic. He developed a specific interest in processing plant rejects and was instrumental in reclassification by the FSA of the liver necrosis rejects from whole bird to partial rejection, resulting in substantial savings for the UK poultry industry.

He has led on several initiatives including hatchery and feed mill hygiene and specifically salmonella control, on alternatives to antimicrobials, and since 2001 has designed and project managed three developments of the bespoke Slate Hall health database application, managing all aspects of the veterinary and laboratory activity.

A Visiting Clinical Lecturer at Surrey Veterinary School, he has a lead role in training new veterinarians at Slate Hall.

He has served the Houghton Trust as a Member (2002-2009) and a Trustee (2009-present), now serving as Honorary Treasurer (since 2018).
